The Life-Changing Thing to Do at Your Next Voice Lesson
The Life-Changing Thing to Do at Your Next Voice Lesson Suzy S. How can you ensure youre making the most of your time in your singing lessons? Record yourself singing, so you can listen back on it later! Consider this advice from Hayward, CA teacher Molly R... Back when I first started voice lessons, my teacher always made sure before we got started that I brought my tape (this was the early 90s!) so that I could record the lesson. As both a student and a teacher, I certainly know the value in recording your voice lessons. When you record yourself singing, you learn everything a LOT quicker. Do you find yourself asking your teacher, What should I practice? There wonât be any questions as to what you need to work on if you simply refer to your recordings! Youâll hear what worked ⦠what didnt work⦠and furthermore, youâll have all your vocal warm-ups in there. If you donât record your lessons, youre likely to forget some of the exercises . Take it up a notch take a video recording! Itâs even more beneficial if you can get a video recording of yourself. This way you can see absolutely everything youâre doing after all, you are a performer! You can see how youâre standing, any tension you may carry, your expressions, and so on. The more you can capture, the more helpful it will be in your overall development as a singer. You do more than just make sound. But do keep in mind that what you hear as youâre making your sound is different from what everyone else hears! Thatâs another reason why you must record yourself singing during voice lessons. Although we go by feel rather than listening as we sing, itâs still important to know what we actually sound like. I like to remind my students that you usually are a lot more pleased with the sound on the recording than you thought you would be so donât be afraid! Dont have fancy equipment? Thats OK The good news is that itâs very easy to record your voice lessons these days. Almost everyone has a smartphone or tablet, and both are excellent for recording and simple to use. Since youâre usually carrying it around, make sure you take it out at the beginning of your lesson and USE IT! You and your voice teacher will both be very happy that you did. Make recording your voice lessons a habit, and youâll definitely find yourself making steady progress! Molly R. teaches online and in-person singing lessons in Hayward, CA. Her specialties include teaching beginner vocalists, shy singers, children, teens, lapsed singers, and older beginners. She joined TakeLessons in November 2013. Learn more about Molly here! Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. Add more garlic for more zing, salt for savouriness, lemon juice for freshness, and dill for a more intense herb flavor.6. NOTE: If you donât have houmous, tahini will make a great base su bstitution for the sauce - just adjust the seasonings to accommodate the lack of flavour tahini provides.7. Also prepare the parsley-tomato topping by tossing tomato and parsley with lemon juice and setting aside to marinate.8. Once sweet potatoes are fork tender and the chickpeas are golden brown - roughly 25 minutes - remove from oven.9. For serving, flip potatoes flesh-side up and smash down the insides a little bit. Then top with chickpeas, sauce and parsley-tomato garnish. Serve immediately.10. Inspired by a Kumon Program Completer, This Student Became One Himself Inspired by a Kumon Program Completer, This Student Became One Himself Sebastian Estrada, 11-years-old, Reading Program Completer, Level J Math 11-year-old Sebastian has already done a lot for a student his age. He is a member of his schoolâs Battle of the Books Club, has earned Principal Honor Roll every year, is a competitive tennis player, and has won first place in his local Math Bowl Competition as both an individual and as part of his schoolâs team. Recently, he added the title of Kumon Reading Program Completer to his long list of accomplishments. Even high-achieving students like Sebastian need some motivation at times, however. As a fourth grader, Sebastian was selected to attend a local Kumon Student Forum and was inspired by Kumon Program Completer Kiran Shay. He was so motivated by Kiranâs speech that he decided to increase his Kumon workload so that he could complete the Reading Program more quickly. This experience also encouraged Sebastian to apply to attend the 2018 Kumon Student Conference. He wanted to meet other inspiring Kumon Students, in hopes of learning more about how they benefited from the program and to share his own experiences with other students from all over North America. Thanks to his impressive resume and zeal for learning, Sebastian was chosen to join 55 other Kumon Students from the United States, Canada, and Mexico at the Student Conference, held in Calgary last July. Sebastian, who is currently studying advanced algebra in the Kumon Math Program, shared more about how heâs seen such success in the program. How has Kumon helped you beyond academics? Kumon has helped me develop a strong sense of discipline and determination. Over the years, I have definitely become more conscious of focusing on what is important to me and what will help me become more successful later in life. It has taught me to balance my time between Kumon, school and my extracurricular activities. Additionally, it has taught me to prioritize everyday tasks and to know that nothing comes without hard work. Sebastian shakes hands with Kumon North America President Mino Tanabe Describe an âa-haâ moment at Kumon when you didnât understand something and then you finally got it. This âa-haâ moment has happened to me several times, especially after I started Level G in math. When I was simplifying polynomials at the end of Level H, I was having a hard time getting the concept. But just like my Instructor says, I did not give up and kept trying to look at the examples provided until finally, I got it! Once I got to the center for my class, I checked the solution book and I had actually done it right! Even though some concepts are very hard to get at first, I have realized that the repetitions in Kumon will let me eventually understand it and master it. What keeps you motivated in Kumon? What keeps me motivated in Kumon is my love for learning and that I always want to know more and more. It is exciting for me every time that I see a new concept. Moreover, I enjoy that I can do my school work with ease, and that my classmates recognize me as an âexpertâ in math and often come to me to get help. Finally, I want to get accepted into one of the top colleges, and I know that the discipline and dedication that Kumon requires will help me get there. Discover even more student success stories. Tips From an Irvine Tutor Post Finals Burnout
Tips From an Irvine Tutor Post Finals Burnout Post Finals Burnout: How to Cope Students worked very hard the last couple of weeks in order to ace those final exams. Of course, students need a well-deserved break in order to recover from the massive amount of study and test prep they participated in at the end of his term. Unfortunately, teachers are under strict orders to continue with the curriculum and fill instructional minutes. So how can students cope with post finals burn out? 1. Have a Relaxing Weekend Because students probably spent the majority of the last 2 or 3 weekends studying, its important that they have a little bit of time to relax and see their friends now that their intense study sessions have ceased. Its also important to have plenty of time to sleep or just relax and participate in leisure activities. Students participating in long term community service may consider finding out if they can take a temporary break so that their brains and bodies can recover from finals (Read: Superfoods and Testing). 2. Use a Study Aid App Because many students minds are entirely burnt out after finals, using a great study aid app is a good way to stay on track. Students who use these apps will have an opportunity to keep track of how many hours they are spending on study, which subjects are a priority, and how much time they have until the next big assignment is due. Students who work with tutors or in a study group are advised to check upcoming deadlines and responsibilities so that they can help each other stay organized (READ: Tips From An Irvine English Tutor: eNotes). 3. Get Some Exercise Many students spend countless hours sitting at the library, at a coffee shop, and at their computer desks in the weeks leading up to finals. Now that students have a little bit of free time, its important that they have a chance to get out and get some exercise. California in January is an absolutely beautiful place and a great opportunity for students to clear their minds of post finals burnout. 4. Work with a Tutor Students who work with a private tutor on a regular basis are encouraged to maintain their sessions and get organized for upcoming assignments. Even though finals are over, the academic wheels keep spinning and its important for students not to fall behind due to mental fatigue. Tutors dont have to take finals and so theyre generally not nearly as tired as their students, allowing them to carry on without undue fatigue. 5. Be Aware of Upcoming College Entrance Exams Even though finals are done for now, many students will be taking the SAT and ACT in February. Students who choose to take these exams at this point in the year are advised that they really wonât have more than a day or two to take a mental break. Students should utilize after school time and/or weekends in order to make sure that they are 100% caught up with any studies that fell by the wayside while they were studying for finals. Weather in a class or working with a private tutor, its important for students to achieve their highest possible score in February so that, hopefully, they wont have to take the test again in May or June. In Short Although many students are feeling incredibly tired at this point in the year, itâs important to take a short break and then re-prioritize study time. Juniors who are getting ready to go on college tours, take important standardized exams, and apply to college within the next few months should be especially mindful of the study to rest ratio.
